Why I made Otter Curiosity
Why
Broadcasting an opinion has become effortless. Listening has become rare. People get sorted into camps, and almost everyone ends up feeling unheard.
I felt it myself. It was rarely that I had nothing to say. It was that I knew what happens to a careful reply in a public comment thread: it gets piled on, or it gets buried. So I'd write half of one, and delete it.
The two sentences
I built Otter Curiosity so that two strangers could finish a conversation able to say one of these:
"I'm not surprised you think that. I'd feel the same."
"I've never thought of it that way. Tell me more."
So this is how it works
- A reply isn't a comment. It's the start of a 1:1 conversation. Nobody is watching from the sidelines, so there's room to explain and room to listen.
- People meet your thoughts before your face. Others see your nickname and what you write. They don't see your photo, and there are no follower counts.
- No algorithm deciding what you see, and no trending list.
- Every post says why its author is curious. So the conversation has substance from the first message, not after twenty rounds of "hi, where are you from?"
- Publishing a post costs shells, and slots are limited. Nobody can flood the place, and every post is one its author meant.
- AI can help you start. It never speaks for you. And there is always a real person on the other side.
Why otters
Sea otters hold hands so they don't drift apart. Shall we?
That's the line in the app, and it's the reason for the whole thing: disagreeing is fine. Drifting apart is what we're trying to stop.
What it isn't
Otter Curiosity isn't a dating app, and it isn't a place to build an audience. If a conversation turns into a friendship, wonderful, but that's a by-product, not the point.
Where it is now
Otter Curiosity is still small, and most of the otters are in Taiwan, so a new post can take a while to get its first reply. It's an app only; there's no web version. Messages are translated between English and Traditional Chinese, so you don't need to share a language with the person you're talking to.
I still run it on my own. If you have an idea, hit a problem, or just want to talk about any of this, email thejourneyofotters@gmail.com. I'll write back myself.
If you'd like to read more first, start with the articles, or go back to the home page.
Questions
Who makes Otter Curiosity?
I do, on my own. It launched on the App Store and Google Play in August 2023, and I still run it myself.
What problem is it trying to solve?
Sharing an opinion has never been easier, and being heard has rarely been harder. Otter Curiosity is built so that two people who see things differently can still talk a topic through to the end.
How can I get in touch?
Email thejourneyofotters@gmail.com. I answer it myself.
